There are no special types of clothing needed for cycle riding, but having the right kinds of clothes can make the bike ride more enjoyable, especially for the teen mountain bike rider who should consider taking some protection against wet weather.

There are certain items of clothing which the teen cyclist might choose to have in his/her riding collection which can serve to be both protective and comfortable to use.

Riding Clothes for Teen Bike Riders.

a). By wearing bright or fluorescent colored clothes it will help other road users to see the road bike rider and help the mountain bike rider to be seen at a distance. It is not a good idea to wear dark colored clothing when riding in darkness.

b). Wear light clothes in the summer time to avoid excess sweating and for both the road and mountain bike riders a water bottle should be carried to avoid dehydration.

c). Wearing of riding gloves is recommended for the mountain biker, and any cyclist not wearing shorts, should ensure that long pants cannot become caught up in the cycle chain, cycle trouser clips are readily obtained at any sports store.

d). For serious riders proper riding shoes can be bought at the sports store, avoid wearing shoes of any type which do not grip the pedals. Do not forget to be a waterproof cycle cape also.

Whilst the teen mountain biker will have a greater degree if freedom in his/her travels, the regular road bike user will have to be more disciplined and follow the rules of the road, to avoid the risk of injury and to have a safe journey,

Riding Safely on the Road.

a). Always ride on the correct side of the road (this can vary from country to country!). Ride with the traffic and never against the traffic flow.

b). In most locations it is illegal to ride on the sidewalk, so use any bike lanes which are available, or stay on the road,

c). If coming out of an alley or side road check for traffic by looking right and left, watch traffic closely for cars pulling out suddenly, or emerging from driveways or side roads

d) Use traffic signals the teen should always signal when making a left or right turn by using arm signals, left arm out for left turn, right arm out for right turn.

e). If the teen is planning to ride in the dark, then both front and rear reflectors should be checked, and that the light batteries are in good condition.

Finally it is not a good idea for the road bike rider to wear a headset and be listening to a music player, this can distract from his/her concentration of the job in hand, which of course is to drive safely. Don’t forget the helmet!!!
